The Moon & Female Fertility

People, plants, and animals are all deeply affected by the moon cycle. As a result, it is no mystery that our moods are influenced as well. The changes in the moon can be divided up into new (dark), new (crescent), waxing (growing), full, and waning (decreasing).

By keeping tabs on the different stages of the moon and correlating it with her own moods and feelings,  a woman can come to a better understanding of her emotions and her fertility.

There is the obvious connection between the female body and the moon. Every woman can feel it, but understanding it and using it as a tool to better understand herself can be harder.

A woman's connection to the moon awakens her to the sacredness of being female. It is a potent reminder that her menstrual cycle and the rhythms of the lunar cycle are related and part of the experience of womanhood. This is the miraculous and mysterious connection for all women.

All a woman needs to do is look at the calendar and observe which phase of the moon she is menstruating with. By observing the pattern that starts to emerge, a woman may 'set' herself to her own particular lunar calendar, keeping track of moods and fertility times.

When a woman begins to chart her menses in relationship to the moon, she begins a journey into herself. She becomes aware that her body, like the earth, is connected to a timeless universal pattern.

"I'm on my moon"! Mood changes – As any woman (and many men!), knows, a female’s feelings and arousal levels change greatly during the various phases of her cycle. The most obtrusive of these emotional chapters is the symptoms of PMS that occur before the menstrual cycle. These moods can include;

  • Sadness or Despair
  • Irritability and anger, which may include frequent outbursts at loved ones
  • Feelings of tension or anxiety
  • Panic attacks
  • Mood swings
  • Crying
  • Disinterest in daily activities and relationships
  • Trouble thinking or focusing
  • Feeling out of control or overwhelmed
  • Fatigue
  • Low energy
  • Food cravings or binge eating

It is important for women to acknowledge the scientific reason for feeling emotional at various points in their cycle. It does not mean the world is falling apart or they are losing control of their emotions. Knowledge can help calm the feeling that you are losing control of yourself. Being in tune with your body and your emotions can also help with PMS, by understanding them and acknowledging them, their control over you decreases. It is also important for men to know that it is not their fault.

In your Ecosensual Journal describe any emotional states during the cycle. H = Happy, S = Sad, C = Cranky, A = Aroused M = Maternal, etc. This will not only help you know what stage you are at in your cycle but help your partner understand the emotional roller coaster he is riding with you!
